- Every household should have a first-aid kit handy for treating minor injuries or ailments or for stopgap treatment before professional attention is received.Herbal medicines are not only prescribed for illnesses – but they are also well suited for first-aid and other purposes at home. In fact, for centuries, up to the discovery of penicillin and the formation of the National Health Service, the traditional way to treat situations requiring immediate attention was the use of herbal remedies.This module can serve as a first aid manual that describes the treatment and management of first aid emergencies and other primary and secondary care with an emphasis on the application of herbal medicines.This module includes detailed instructions for treating first aid emergencies as well as procedures for not-so-urgent care. This is not intended to replace the intervention of the emergency services and as an herbalist, you need to be clear on when it is not appropriate to use herbal medicine but refer to a medical practitioner.Herbal traditions have been passed down from one generation to the next. This is because they are so effective and easy to obtain and prepare. When properly administered, herbs can be just as effective as and sometimes more effective than their pharmaceutical counterparts when applied in first aid. Some herbs can speed up and help with minor cuts, bruises, and burns.
